Over the past 5-10 years, there has been a tremendous cultural shift in the way that consumers interact with businesses. Around 75% of new customers now meet local businesses first online, rather than through traditional marketing channels such as radio or newspaper commercials- isn’t that crazy?! So, if you aren’t advertising your business online, are you potentially missing out on around 75% of your potential customers…?
Don’t get me wrong, traditional marketing definitely has its place, and it can generate you a lot of sales and traffic to your website when done properly. I, however, am strongly team digital, and here are my top reasons why.
1. Digital Marketing is very scalable.
With traditional marketing, you might select a newspaper advert size, pay a set price and then that is that; there is no opportunity to increase that advert until the next publication goes out. With digital marketing, you can start with a much lower budget, and as you see more sales coming through from that ad, you can scale your budget up instantly to increase the number of sales and return on investment.
2. Digital Marketing is more cost-effective than Traditional Marketing.
Let’s take a TV ad for example. It may cost you $5,000-$10,000 to have a 15 second TV ad running over a reasonably short period of time. If you do not get your messaging or your timing right, you may not get the ROI you need to make the ad worth it. With digital marketing, you are able to test different ads, placements, timings and messaging at a lot lower cost.
3. Targeting the right market.
With digital marketing, you are able to really specifically target certain audiences. For example, you may want to show a particular ad about a pair of high heel shoes to women, aged 30-40 years, who like to shop online, and are interested in high end fashion items. This is 100% doable in the digital marketing landscape. When it comes to traditional ads, you could make the assumption that this particular target market would typically read a certain magazine so you can choose to show your ad there, but in reality you have very little control over who is actually seeing your ad.
4. All about the data.
Yes, we are data nerds here at DDM. The number 1 thing we LOVE about digital marketing, is that we get aaaaall the data. We can see exactly how many people saw our ad, how many people clicked on the ad, how many people actually purchased or contacted us from that ad, and so much more! With traditional marketing, the only concrete data you can get is how many people were shown that TV ad, or sold that magazine. From there you need to estimate how many sales or leads you got from that ad by asking your customers how they heard about you.
