Why Hashtags Are Important

We live in a digital world where social media is big.New platforms keep popping up and social media dominates communication. When something is new and trending it will turn viral and this happens almost everyday. Hashtags are a key player in making things go viral.  People typically attach trending hashtags such as #selfie, who remembers those days!) to help grow there reach and potential to go viral.

What are Hashtags?

A hashtag is a word or phrase preceded by the # sign, it is used on social media sites. The hashtag becomes a clickable link that leads to a feed of other posts that use the same hashtag.

Why Should I Use Hashtags?

Hashtags are helpful when searching for something on social media platforms. For example if you do #cat it will show you everything that mentions and relates to cats. When creating a post you can also add a hashtag on the description. In doing this it will then show your post on that hashtag search and increase the chances of reaching new audiences on social media.

Hashtag Best Practices

Each social media platform has their own way of best practices for using hashtags effectively.

Twitter uses it to start and join in conversations, whilst Instagram uses hashtags to categorise content and make it more discoverable.

Facebook uses hashtags to promote branded tags while LinkedIn uses them for specific professionalism and industry specific topics.

TikTok uses hashtags for trending topics and challenges and helps creators get their content on the for you page. Pinterest uses it in the description to make the pin relevant.

Types of Hashtags

Anyone can create or use a hashtag, there are a variety of hashtags with their own popularity. You have brand hashtags, industry hashtags, campaign hashtags, product hashtags, trending hashtags and so much more!

A brand hashtag compared to an industry hashtag is one is the name of the brand while the other is the industry it is in, here at Daisy we use #daisydigitalmarketing for the brand hashtag which is niche but relevant and we use the #digitalmarketing for the industry hashtag because it is very popular. To find out what instagram hashtags are best for you and your business look at the competition to see what they are using, and have a think about what keywords may relate to your business that you’d want to show for in searches.

Give using hashtags a go, they will help increase the visibility of your social media posts and you will also be able to see what is new and trending. Watch how hashtags will help build awareness and engagement. #giveitago
