The Biggest Mistakes Businesses Make with Social Media Ads (and How to Avoid Them)

Let’s be honest… social media ads can be amazing for your business. But only if they’re done properly. Otherwise, you’re basically handing Meta your wallet and hoping for the best.

We’ve seen it all, budget blowouts, zero results, and the classic “why is no one clicking?” meltdown. So let’s save you the stress (and money) with the most common ad mistakes we see all the time.

Having No Strategy

“Let’s just run some ads and see what happens” is not a strategy. It’s a fast track to disappointment (and a drained ad account).

Here’s what to do: Know exactly what you want from your ad, sales, signups, website traffic, lead generation, and then build your campaign around that one clear goal. Not five. One.

Boosting Posts

We say this with love, but stop boosting posts. It’s not advertising, it’s donating to Mark Zuckerberg’s yacht fund.

Boosted posts give you very little control over who sees your ad, how it performs, or how you track success. It’s like throwing your ad into the void and hoping for the best.

What to do instead: Use Meta Ads Manager, every single time. You get better targeting, more creative options, and actual data that means something.

Boring, Blurry, or Blah Creative

You’ve got one second to stop the scroll. If your ad looks like a Canva template from 2017 or has 15 lines of text crammed into one image, people are scrolling on, fast.

Fix it like this: Clean visuals, snappy copy, and one strong message. And if you’re using video, keep it short, punchy, and designed for sound-off viewing.

No Testing (aka All Eggs, One Basket)

Running one ad and crossing your fingers is not testing. It’s gambling, and not the fun Vegas kind.

Try this instead: Test different audiences, images, headlines, and call-to-actions in small batches. Let the data tell you what’s working before you pour more budget in.

No Retargeting Strategy

Ever clicked on something online, then totally forgot about it? That’s your audience too. Most people don’t convert the first time, they need a little reminder.

Here’s your fix: Set up retargeting ads for people who’ve visited your site, watched your videos, or interacted with your content. These are your warm leads. Don’t let them go cold.

No Tracking or Follow-Up Plan

If you don’t know what happens after someone clicks, how do you know your ads are even working?

Make sure you’re:

  • Using your Meta Pixel
  • Tracking actual conversions (not just likes or reach)
  • Following up with leads via email, DMs or retargeting

The ad is just the start. The follow-up is what turns interest into sales.

So… Still Want to DIY This?

Social media ads can be powerful, but they also chew up time, budget, and brainspace you probably don’t have.

If you want to stop winging it and actually run ads that get results? We’ve got options.

We can take it off your hands with full ad management.  Or train you up 1:1 so you can do it confidently yourself (without the guesswork).
