Our top 10 Google Ads learnings of 2025 (so far)

Google Ads has changed rapidly in the last 12 or so months. If you’re still trying to manage your campaigns the way you did last year, you’re not just missing out; you’re probably just watching your budget disappear.

The whole game is now built around AI and automation. You need to adapt, and you need to do it fast. Take it from us, we see these accounts every week.

1. The AI Needs Great Food

Think of Google’s AI like a chef. If you give it low-quality ingredients, you’re going to get a disappointing meal. It’s the ultimate “garbage-in, garbage-out” idea.

Stop reusing blurry images. Invest time in creating diverse, high-quality text, images, and especially video assets. The better the inputs, the better the AI can pinpoint your ideal customer.

2. Performance Max (PMax) Isn’t Optional Anymore

PMax isn’t some experimental campaign; it’s the new normal. If you’re not using it to its full potential, you’re leaving money on the table.

Learn to master PMax. Use the new tools Google gives you, like negative keyword lists and asset reports, to gently steer the AI in the right direction.

3. Your Own Customer Data is Gold

The tech world is getting rid of third-party cookies. Businesses that have a direct relationship with their customers are the ones that are going to win.

Get serious about collecting emails and using your CRM. Tools like Customer Match and Enhanced Conversions let you feed the AI your best audience data, giving you a huge competitive edge.

4. Conversion Tracking Must Be Flawless

AI optimises for what you tell it to. If your tracking is set up poorly, the AI is essentially flying blind and making bad spending decisions.

Immediately audit your GA4 and conversion setup. For example, use Conversion Value Rules to clearly tell the AI that a sale is way more important than a contact form fill.

5. Demand Gen Helps Fill the Bucket

You need ads that reach people before they even know they need you. That’s what Demand Gen is for, hitting users across YouTube, Gmail, and Discover with eye-catching visuals.

Start testing Demand Gen. It’s how you build awareness and plant the seed so when they are ready to search, they search for you.

6. Broad Match Has Grown Up

We all remember when Broad Match was a budget nightmare. Now, combined with Smart Bidding, it’s surprisingly good at finding those niche, high-intent search terms you never even knew existed.

Give it a try! Just make sure you pair it with a solid set of negative keywords to keep control and weed out the garbage clicks.

7. Visuals Will Always Outrank Text

The digital landscape is moving so quickly. On platforms like YouTube Shorts and Discover, if your visual isn’t engaging, no one will stick around to read your clever copy.

Focus on high-quality visual assets, different image sizes, and short, punchy videos. Your goal is to stop the scroll, not explain your entire business plan in one ad.

8. Watch the AI Overviews

Google is starting to include AI summaries in search results. Your ads might show up alongside or underneath these summaries, which changes what users expect.

Ensure your landing pages provide clear, direct, and trustworthy answers. The AI will look for this, and so will your potential customers.

9. Don’t Just “Set and Forget”

The AI takes care of the grunt work, but it doesn’t replace your brain. Your role shifts from micro-managing bids to being the strategic director.

Set clear, strong goals. Regularly analyse your reports. Add those negative keywords. And continuously refresh your creative assets. You are the brains; the AI is the muscle.

10. Perfect the Landing

CPC is only going up. That means every click you pay for is more valuable. You simply cannot afford to send high-quality traffic to a slow, confusing landing page.

Get obsessed with increasing your Conversion Rate. Make sure your landing pages are fast, relevant, and guide the user through the conversion process effortlessly.

Running Google Ads is less about manual labour and more about smart, strategic direction. You need to be better than ever with your data, your creative, and your setup.
